Affordances and Constraints
Your Task
Think about the digital technologies you use every day: texting, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Canvas, Google Docs, Zoom, your smartphone, etc. We often think of these technologies simply as tools that help us get things done. But technologies do more than that. They shape what we can do, what we communicate, how we relate to others, how we think, and even how we present ourselves.
In this blog, you will write a 300-word post for an audience of college freshmen that introduces readers to the concepts of affordances and constraints.
Begin by explaining what affordances and constraints are, based on what you read for class. Then choose a generative AI platform that you have used and explain at least two of its affordances and two of its constraints. As you develop your examples, consider how the technology affects at least three of these five areas:
Doing: What does the technology allow or prevent you from doing?
Meaning: How does it shape what you can communicate or how messages are understood?
Relating: How does it influence your relationships and interactions with others?
Thinking: How does it influence what you notice, remember, or think about?
Being: How does it shape the identities you can express or how you present yourself?
Focus on trade-offs. What does the technology make possible, and what possibilities does it limit or foreclose?
Be specific. Rather than saying that a technology is "easy to use," explain what it allows you to do, what it prevents or makes difficult, and why those possibilities and limitations matter.
Multimedia Component
Include at least one visual or multimedia element in your response. This could be a screenshot, photograph, GIF, short video, icon, or other relevant visual. Use the multimedia element rhetorically: it should help illustrate one of the affordances or constraints you discuss.
The multimedia element can be AI generated. If you choose to use AI generated media, you must include a caption that provides the following information (see above for example):
